My deepest condolences for the demise of your laptop. Will you be sitting shiva?
On a serious note avoid Vista unless you go high end on the lap top. My wife insisted on having Vista installed on her Dell. It is not a good mix and she will not let me rebuild it with XP.

I had Vista on my laptop at a previous job. It's not an experience I wish to repeat.
