The end of the civil war is not an open and shut case. The north won the military battle, but the south has dominated US politics ever since. Southern influence has subsequently corrupted the entire American political process into the mess of cronyism and religious extremism it is today. At best, the result was a draw.

As it stands today, the north would have been far batter off letting the south go and keep their southern culture in a different country.

There remains the problem that allowing the South to leave would have opened up the continent to machinations from European powers, not to mention leaving millions of black Americans enslaved.

Or, the US government might have continued Reconstruction, instead of canceling it after the election of 1876.

I've had fantasies of sending certain states (like Texas) a copy of their declaration of secession, stamped 'approved'. Along with their congresscritters.
