IN THE NEWS
One of the best blogs out there is Orcinus, written by David Neiwert, a freelance journalist and author of several books on American extremism. Neiwert is one of the best sources of information about domestic terrorists, which get nearly no attention in the news. Case in point was the revelation that the FBI was guarding against a possible right-wing terrorist attack on the Democratic convention.
You mean you hadn't heard about that planned terrorist attack? Gosh, I wonder why.
OK, actually, I don't. The incurious American press has been looking wherever Ashcroft and other Administration officials point, and they're not spending more than a tiny fraction of their time talking about domestic terrorism. (Or investigating and prosecuting the wannabe Timothy McVeighs as aggressively as they're going after the alleged Mohammed Attas of the future.)
Neiwert doesn't always post about domestic terrorism, and since he's a busy writer and father, he doesn't post as often as other bloggers. However, when he does, he has some of the best-informed things to say about domestic terrorists--who, unfortunately, are hiding in plain sight, in a big national blind spot.
If you don't believe me, here's a pop quiz question: Who is William Krar? I bet most of you struggled a bit to remember, if you'd heard the name at all. Click here for some background.
