IN THE NEWS
Two roughly related stories from today's news:
- US officials are using bribes to deflect some insurgent attacks.
- 68 killed in another Baghdad car bomb attack, clearly designed to frighten people out of joining the Iraqi police.
Now, that's not the good news/bad news juxtaposition I wanted to make. Here's the real one:
- Good news: The bribes will work with some groups we're fighting in Iraq. Some factions are jumping on the anti-occupation bandwagon because (1) they'd look bad if they didn't, and (2) they stand to win a great deal of influence if they do. They can also win this influence through money, connections with the Americans, and related means, so what they lose from releasing hostages or scratching some roadside attacks, they gain from the bribes.
- Bad news: The bribes won't work with all groups we're fighting in Iraq. The parties behind the car bomb attacks are dedicated killers with ambitious goals--the end of the occupation altogether, an Islamist regime, the purging of Western influences. These factions are not going to be bought.
Once again, it's important to remember, there is no monolithic insurgency in Iraq. My sympathies to those who lost loved ones in today's bombing.
