IN THE NEWS
Since I'm in a whimsical mood today, I'll mention that, if this blog had a soundtrack, it'd be written by Warren Zevon. I've been a big fan of Zevon's since college, and a lot of his music fits this blog. If you're not familiar with him, check out the lyrics to songs like Veracruz, Jungle Work, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, Lawyers, Guns, and Money, Leave My Monkey Alone, and The Envoy.
Zevon wrote a lot more than these particular songs about mercenaries, spies, and diplomats. Some of his songs are incredibly funny, including darkly comic jabs at his own weaknesses (including a nasty struggle with alcoholism). 
Other songs are honest in ways that feel like a punch in the solar plexus--they take your breath away, and not very gently. His best songs are dark, funny, and uplifting at the same time. Some of my favorites include Desperadoes under the Eaves, Life'll Kill You, Don't Let Us Get Sick, Bad Karma, Trouble Waiting to Happen, Excitable Boy, Rub Me Raw, and Poor Poor Pitiful Me.
Warren Zevon passed away recently. After beating alcoholism, he was struck down by cancer. There's a DVD about his last album, The Wind, which he wrote and recorded while he knew he was down to his last weeks. The Wind isn't his best album, by the way, but it's an amazing accomplishment. I'm not a person who really has emotional attachments to celebrities--they are, after all, people whom we don't know. I do miss Warren Zevon, though. And Ray Charles. The world is smaller without both of them.
As I said, I'm in a rare mood. It's summer, the weather's gorgeous, and I've already written a lot of very serious posts. I thought it'd be harmless to be a personal for a moment.
