IN THE NEWS
I'll be on the road Wednesday and Thursday. I'll be posting a bit while I'm traveling, but I may not be able to respond right away to your comments. (I always look forward to the uninterrupted writing time on a plane, so who knows what crazy notions I'll conjure up in the next couple of days.)
Meanwhile, I recommend this interview with Bernard Lewis, Middle East scholar and all-around thoughtful person. I'd agree, by the way, with his belief that there are democratic veins to be mined in Islam--you just have to know where to look. (The scholastic tradition in shar'ia law, and the way in which clerics get elevated to the status of imams and ayatollahs, are examples of possibly fertile ground in which to plant explicitly democratic principles.)
My bridge-building discussion with Simone Ledeen continues here, by the way. Any suggestions are certainly welcome.
It's always important to get updates. Im in awe hearing your thoughts on that interview.
