IN THE NEWS
Fifty years ago, after McCarthy tried to accuse the Army of being a hotbed of communism, Joseph Welch, on live TV, turned to Tail Gunner Joe and said, "At long last, sir, have you no shame?" It was the moment that ended McCarthy and McCarthyism.
In the last few extraordinary days, we haven't had the same highly dramatic moments. We've had little moments, when the US military clearly indicated that it has had enough of having the honor, flesh, and readiness of its soldiers flayed by the ineptitude and arrogance of the Bush Administration. Little moments, to be sure, but no less significant perhaps than Welch's.
"Current and former U.S. military officers are blaming Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and his aides for the inadequate troop strength on the ground in Iraq, saying the civilian leaders "micromanaged" the deployment plan out of mistrust of the generals and an attempt to prove their own theory that a light, maneuverable force could handily defeat Iraqi President Saddam Hussein." (The Washington Post, 03/30/04)"Army Maj. Gen. Charles H. Swannack Jr., the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, who spent much of the year in western Iraq, said he believes that at the tactical level at which fighting occurs, the U.S. military is still winning. But when asked whether he believes the United States is losing, he said, 'I think strategically, we are.'" (The Washington Post, 05/09/04)
"Indeed, Horton says that the JAG officers specifically warned him that Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas J. Feith, one of the most powerful political appointees in the Pentagon, had significantly weakened the military's rules and regulations governing prisoners of war. The officers told Horton that Feith and the Defense Department's general counsel, William J. Haynes II, were creating 'an atmosphere of legal ambiguity' that would allow mistreatment of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan." (Joe Conason, Salon, 05/07/04)
"SGT Davis also stated that he had heard MI [military intelligence] insinuate to the guards to abuse the inmates. When asked what MI said he stated: 'Loosen this guy up for us.' 'Make sure he has a bad night.' 'Make sure he gets the treatment.'" (ARTICLE 15-6 INVESTIGATION OF THE 800th MILITARY POLICE BRIGADE, otherwise known as the Taguba report.)
And, most damning...
"This was not just a failure of leadership at the local command level. This was a failure that ran straight to the top. Accountability here is essential — even if that means relieving top leaders from duty in a time of war." (The Army Times, editorial, 05/10/04)
I hope you have a nice day! Very good article, well written and very thought out. I am looking forward to reading more of your posts in the future.
I tend to agree with the comments here about the general disapproval about the monument. I live in the DC area and enjoy walks along the monument area.Nike SB Dunk High My biggest problem with the WWII monument is that the monument seems to glorify the war over the service members who lost their lives. SB DunkThe other war memorials in the area (WWI, Korea and Vietnam) place the emphasis on those who fell (either by name or pictures) while the WWII monument places the glory on the battles and campaigns. The only nod to fallen service members is in the form of a field of stars which, if people were not told what they meant, would pass with little attention being paid to it.
