A couple of weeks ago, the White House press corps let another interesting question slip past them. Press Secretary Tony Snow's statement that President Bush had read Camus' The Stranger during his vacation, which Bush and Snow had later discussed, needed a little bit more attention than it received. Instead, the elite journalists tittered in amusement over what sounded like a fraternity prank ("Hey, Snowball, tell 'em I read some existentialist guy during my break!"). Here's the obvious question I would have asked—not of Snow, but of the President himself: What did you glean from a book about the moral void that an occupying power can easily make for itself?
